Two weeks before leaving office, United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on his Twitter that the Trump administration’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara is a massive «breakthrough for peace».

«For decades, U.S. Administrations failed to resolve the conflict between Morocco and Western Sahara, because they didn't want to take risks. We did, in the interest of peace», wrote Pompeo, referring to the presidential decree signed by President Donald Trump on December 10, 2020.

He also referred to the opening of an American consulate in the city of Dakhla. «I was proud to announce that the U.S. will open a consulate in Western Sahara», he added.
