Algeria, which was to host the 2020 edition of the Arab League summit postponed due to Covid-19, insists on hosting the 2021 edition of this event. Well-informed diplomatic sources told Egyptian newspaper Youm7 on Monday that Algiers «refused to let any other country host the Arab summit».

The same sources, who recall that «Algeria has the right to host the Arab summit as long as it insists on doing it», have  expressed some reservations.

Indeed, they believe that member states could «reduce their levels of representativeness at the next summit» if the latter is organized in Algeria. They refer to «Hirak protests» as well as «internal instability».

On the other hand, the same sources indicate that the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Arab League will hold an emergency meeting next February. «The main theme of the meeting will be the Palestinian question», the same source added.
