Russia’s ambassador to Algeria Igor Beliaev addressed, Saturday, the Western Sahara issue, accusing «countries», without naming them, of blocking the appointment of a special envoy to Western Sahara.

«We do not understand the reasons behind the delay in appointing an envoy to Western Sahara», he told Algerian newspaper Ennahar.

The Polisario Front explicitly accuses France, a permanent member of the Security Council, of opposing the appointment of a new envoy for the Sahara.

The Russian diplomat criticized, for his part, the interest of the United Nations in resolving the Libyan conflict more than its interest in reaching a solution to the Western Sahara question.

Igor Beliaev thus refers to the American recognition of the full sovereignty of Morocco over Western Sahara. Russia previously considered that the US decision breaches «international law».
