Algeria is planning to run for a seat at the UN Security Council for the period between 2024 and 2025 as a non-permanent member for the Africa zone.

According to Algerian daily El Bilad, the Algerian candidacy «was supported by the African Union executive council» during its ordinary session held yesterday.

This is not the first time that Algiers announces such step. In January 2018, Algeria’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdelkader Messahel revealed that his government plans to run for the round table of the United Nations executive body for the period 2019-2020.

A project intended to compensate for losing a seat at the African Union Peace and Security Council.
