Renault's industrial unit in Tangier has decided to suspend its activities for a few days, due to a global computer chip shortage, produced in China and Taiwan.

Renault and Stellantis announced this measure on Friday and applied to its units in France, Germany, Romania, Spain and Tangier, Morocco.

Several automotive companies have been impacted by this shortage. Stellantis, the automaker born from the merger of PSA in France and Fiat Chrysler in Italy, is also affected by the shortage, like Ford, Toyota Motor Corp and Volkswagen.

Reuters explains that the health crisis linked to Covid-19 has increased demand for chips used in electronic devices, such as laptops and phones. Manufacturers have struggled to keep up with growing needs, as some suppliers have been hit by US sanctions by the Trump administration.
