Early results from UK coronavirus vaccination campaign show «spectacular» impact on preventing serious illness, according to research conducted by Public Health Scotland. Indeed, four weeks after the first dose, hospital admissions were reduced by 94% for AstraZeneca injections, writes the BBC.

Preliminary data from the EAVE II project covers 1.14 million vaccines administered in Scotland between December 8 and February 15. They indicate that among people over the age of 80, there has been an overall reduction of 81% in the number of hospital admissions. The study thus examined the number of hospital admissions with Covid-19 among this population and compared it to those admitted who were not vaccinated.

In total, there were just over 8,000 people who ended up in the hospital, but only 58 people were among the vaccinated group after four weeks. Lead researcher Professor Aziz Sheikh said the results were «very impressive» and that both vaccines worked «spectacularly».

«These results are very encouraging and have given us great reasons to be optimistic for the future», he added.

The study only followed those who had been admitted to hospital, their vaccination status as well as the risk of becoming seriously ill. Although other similar studies are underway in the UK, these data are considered extremely encouraging.
