King Mohammed VI sent a congratulatory message to Mohamed Bazoum following his election as President of the Republic of Niger. «By placing their trust in you, the Nigerien people paid homage to your humane qualities and to your rich political experience», wrote the sovereign.
«The Sovereign also salutes the excellent friendship that the two countries maintain, a friendship marked by solidarity cooperation and a common vision for the unity and development of Africa».
King Mohammed VI has, moreover, «expressed his firm determination to work with the elected President for his consolidation at the regional level».
President Mohamed Bazoum received 55% of the votes in the second round of the presidential election, against his rival Mahamane Ousame, who was faced with a wave of protests.
People took to the streets to protest their disapproval of the official results. Clashes with public forces erupted in the capital, Niamey, and other cities across the country. Two deaths were recorded and 468 arrests were made following the protests, according to the Nigerien Minister of Interior, reports Le Monde.
Mohamed Bazoum is considered to be the successor of the former president, Mahamadou Issoufou (in office since April 7, 2011). Both belong to the same political party, the Niger Party for Democracy and Socialism.
Under the presidency of Issoufou, relations between Morocco and Niger have strengthened. He was the initiator of the kingdom's invitation to take part in an ECOWAS summit on terrorist threat, organized in September 2019.
