Switzerland narrowly voted on Sunday in favor of banning face coverings in public. «Official results showed the measure had passed by 51.2% to 48.8% in Sunday's referendum», BBC wrote.
The proposal was submitted by right-wing Swiss People's Party (SVP), which launched a campaign with slogans saying, «Stop extremism».
«Today's decision opens old wounds, further expands the principle of legal inequality, and sends a clear signal of exclusion to the Muslim minority», the Central Council of Muslims said in a statement.
By voting against face coverings in public, Switzerland joins France, Austria, Bulgaria, Belgium and Denmark. About 5.5% of the Swiss population is Muslim, and is mostly from former Yugoslavia.
