Sixty migrants manage to cross the fence into Melilla

More than 150 migrants climbed, Monday, the fence separating the city of Melilla from Morocco. Only 59 of them managed to reach the city, according to the Spanish authorities.

The attempt took place at around 6 am, the prefecture of Melilla announced in a statement, adding that three members of the Civil Guard and two migrants were slightly injured, Info Migrants wrote.

The migrants who managed to cross the fence into Melilla were immediately taken to a health center to be tested for Covid-19, then quarantined, said the prefecture, which notes that these people will be transferred to a reception center for immigrants in the city.

On January 19, another attempt to cross the border took place, in which 87 migrants out of 150 managed to enter the city. Nine of them were injured and transferred to hospital.

On August 20, 2020, around 300 people stormed the fence, but only about 30 of them were able to cross to Melilla. However, one migrant died during this crossing..

In the first two months of the current year, 389 migrants managed to enter Ceuta and Melilla in this way, a notable drop from the 969 who did so during the same period in 2020, according to data from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior. 

In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, 1,755 migrants entered the two enclaves by land in 2020, a drop of 72% compared to 2019 (6,346).
