In a letter sent on March 19 to the EU ambassador in Rabat, around thirty MEPs from the European expressed concern over the health of Hirak detainees, particularly Nasser Zefzafi and Mohamed Jalloul, following the hunger strike they started in February.

The MEPs asked the German diplomat, Claudia Wiedey, «to react publicly to the worrying state of health of the political prisoners of Rif, to visit them in prisons and to meet their lawyers», wrote Miguel Urbán (Spanish MEP of Anticapitalistas and founder of Podemos).

«Morocco has obligations that it must fulfill. The EU must stop ignoring the constant violations that the Moroccan regime commits against the Rif people», he added. The MEP revealed that similar letters were sent to the President of the European Parliament and the Chairman of the Human Rights Committee «to also solicit their reaction». Urbán also denounced «the complicit silence» of the EU.

In February, the Spanish politician headed a group of MEPs demanding the «suspension of the trade and fisheries agreement  and the funding that Morocco receives in terms of neighborhood and investments». A sanction that the EU is called upon to take «against the violations of human rights committed by» Morocco in Western Sahara.

For the record, MEPs sent a letter in September to the head of government, Saadeddine El Othmani, on their «concern over the situation of Hirak political prisoners amid the Covid-19 pandemic».
