Arrested on December 29, 2020, Moroccan historian and activist Maati Monjib was granted provisional release on Tuesday, March 23, after 20 days of hunger strike.

In the afternoon, his lawyers confirmed this decision made by the investigating judge, welcoming his release from prison and thanking those who made it possible.

The historian's state of health was already weakened by previous hunger strikes he led, as well as his diabetes and heart problems. For several days, a support committee has increased calls for his release.

In France, his wife urged French President Emmanuel Macron to intervene and ask for the release of Monjib.

For the record, Monjib was accused of embezzlement and money laundering. Prior to his arrest, the judicial police in Rabat and Casablanca had summoned Monjib on multiple occasions for investigations in relation to these charges.
