400 million doses of Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 vaccine will be sent to African Union countries, the American pharmaceutical giant announced on Monday. As a first step, 220 million doses will be delivered to African countries, including Morocco, by the third quarter of 2021.
These countries can order 180 million additional doses by 2022, reports AFP. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine requires only one injection.
«No one is safe until everyone is safe, and we have been committed to equitable, global access to new Covid-19 vaccines», J&J's CEO Alex Gorsky said in a statement.
Morocco, which has already vaccinated more than 4 million people, is «committed to acquire soon» the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, the Health Minister Khalid Ait Taleb earlier in March.
During the same month, the National Technical and Scientific Advisory Committee on Vaccination gave the green light to the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
