The United States invited Morocco to take part in an online meeting, held on Tuesday, March 30, of the Global Coalition against Daesh. The kingdom was represented there by its Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The ministers «noted with concern the serious and growing threat Daesh/ISIS affiliates pose across West Africa and the Sahel, as well as the emerging threat in other parts of the continent, particularly in East Africa», reads a statement published by the US Department of State.
«The Coalition reaffirmed its willingness to further explore how it can contribute to collective efforts to cope with the threat posed by Daesh/ISIS in these regions, and that such efforts be upon the request and prior consent of countries concerned, and be in close coordination with African partners and existing initiatives such as the International Coalition for the Sahel, and in full respect of international law».
In his speech, Nasser Bourita also focused on the Sahel and West Africa. He pleaded for «better coordination of international initiatives and efforts to address the situation which is evolving on the ground».
Bourita recalled, on this occasion, that the first meeting of the Coalition against Daesh in West Africa, held in November, recommended to bring «concrete support» to the countries of the region.
As soon as it was launched by the United States in September 2014, the kingdom joined the anti-Daesh coalition. After its setbacks in Syria and Iraq, the Sahel and West Africa are the new scenes of action for the terrorist organization.
Morocco intends to play a role in the war that is brewing against extremist groups in the region. It was invited to the last G5 Sahel summit held in February in Ndjamena.
