A first allocation of vaccines against the new coronavirus has been granted to Morocco, through the COVAX program of the World Health Organization (WHO), pending additional doses in the coming weeks. The Health ministry announced Thursday evening that this supply will allow the country to «carry out the national vaccination campaign against Covid-19, launched on January 28», without specifying the number of batches of injections granted.
According to UNICEF, Morocco has already received 307,200 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine from the COVAX mechanism out of an allocated total of 1.61 million.
Morocco is one of the countries that participated in this program, set up by the Global Alliance for Immunization Vaccines. This program is implemented in coordination with WHO, UNICEF and the Coalition for Innovations in Epidemic Preparedness, among other partners, said a statement from the ministry.
The same source points out that for the time being, this program has given the possibility to more than 100 countries to have rapid and equitable access to anti-Covid-19 vaccines recognized by the UN, so as to cover 20% of the population. Since the start of acquisitions of anti-Covid-19 vaccines and beside this program, Morocco has acquired a total of 8.5 million doses.
