Denmark announced on Wednesday that it is definitely giving up on the AstraZeneca vaccine because of its «rare» but «serious» side effects. The Danish health authorities' announcement makes the Scandinavian country the first nation to abandon the AstraZeneca vaccine and the University of Oxford in Europe, AFP reports.

Despite the opinions of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the WHO in favor of its use, «the vaccination campaign in Denmark continues without the AstraZeneca vaccine», said the director of the National Health Agency, Søren Brostrøm, at a press conference.

Denmark was the first European country to suspend, in March, the use of the Covid-19 vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford. The Danish health authorities then explained that this decision was taken «as a precaution», citing fears related to blood clots.

In the United States, the vaccine developed by Johnson & Johnson was suspended after the appearance of blood clots in six vaccinated people (out of 6.8 million). The pharmaceutical group has indeed taken the decision to delay the deployment of its vaccine in Europe. In the United States on the other hand, vaccination relied on Johnson & Johnson has already started before being paused.

The American health authorities would have observed «thromboses of the cerebral venous sinuses», that is to say of the veins of the brain, they indicated Tuesday at the time of suspending the vaccination, writes LCI. Out of 6.8 million vaccinated with this product, six cases (including one death) occurred in «women aged 18 to 48».

An opinion from the European Medicines Agency on the American vaccine is expected this Wednesday.
