Morocco’s foreign minister holds talks with Irish counterpart ahead of UN meeting on the Sahara

On Tuesday, April 20, the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs held talks with his Irish counterpart, Simon Coveney. During their online meeting, the two diplomat «welcomed the forthcoming opening of an Irish embassy in Morocco and the appointment of an Irish ambassador to Morocco», the foreign ministry announced in a press release.

Coveney «reiterated Ireland's support for the strategic partnership which links the European Union to Morocco, marked by its support for its serious and credible efforts to bring stability and development to the region». 

The two foreign ministers agreed to continue their exchanges and consultations on regional and international issues of common interest, such as Libya and the Sahel.

These talks take place on the eve of the Security Council meeting devoted to the Sahara issue. Ireland is a non-permanent member of the UN body from January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2022.
