A new envoy to the Sahara, the Polisario changes the tone

After having long accused Morocco of blocking the appointment of a personal envoy to Western Sahara, the Polisario has changed its mind. On Wednesday, April 21, ahead of the Security Council meeting on the regional dispute, its representative in Europe voiced the new position of his movement. «Sending a UN envoy will be doomed to failure», Oubi Bouchraya Bachir told APS.

There is a «suspicious desire» to reduce the Sahara issue to the designation of a successor to the German Horst Köhler. «This is a superficial vision which does not allow reaching a just and rapid solution capable of avoiding unfortunate consequences for the region», he claimed.

Bouchraya also «denied the French media's assertions accusing the Polisario Front of being behind the blockage», reports APS.

It should be noted that it was Agence France Presse (AFP) that reported last week, quoting international diplomatic sources, that the Polisario rejected the appointment of former Portuguese Minister of Foreign Affairs Louis Amado, for simple statements made during a visit to Rabat in 2017. Brahim Ghali's movement accuses him of having welcomed the autonomy plan presented by Morocco in 2007.

The words of this Polisario representative contradict the revelations made by Bachir Mustapha Sayed. The latter indicated that the name of the next personal envoy to the Sahara will be known on Wednesday April 21 during the meeting of the United Nations executive body.

Yesterday, Omar Hilale, permanent representative of the Kingdom to the UN in New York, accused the Polisario and Algeria of delaying the appointment of a new envoy, adding that the two parties had rejected the candidacies of the former Romanian prime minister, Petre Roman and the Portuguese Louis Amado.
