The former president of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, reacted to our article titled «When Morocco sacrificed its relationship with Catalonia to please Spain». On his Twitter account, he wrote : «dear Moroccan friends. Know that Spain never keeps its promises. You should never pay upfront».
Four years after the sacrifices made by Morocco to Spain over Catalonia, the Sanchez government welcomed Brahim Ghali on the sly without notifying Rabat.
Chers amis du Maroc, sachez que l'Espagne ne tient jamais ses promesses. On ne peut jamais payer à l'avance.

Before the Moroccan government refused to give the go-ahead to an official visit by Puigdemont to Morocco in 2017, relations between the Kingdom and Catalonia were deep, sealed under the reign of late King Hassan II who had particular links with the very charismatic president of the region, Jordi Pujol.
Morocco then received Pujol's successors at the head of the Generalitat, namely the socialist Pasqual Maragall, in May 2004, and the right-wing nationalist Artur Mas in February 2012.
