The families of journalists Omar Radi and Soulaiman Raissouni observed a sit-in on Monday in front of the Oukacha prison in Casablanca to call for their lives to be saved. «We regret, as families of journalists and political detainees (...) that arbitrary detention continues against the law and for many months», they said in a statement.

The families recall that the two journalists «tasted the bitterness of the violation of their rights and the persistence of systematic reprisals against them, by denying them a fair trial concerning the alleged acts attributed to them».

The statement added that «their lives are facing a real threat which seems to be taken lightly by the authorities».

«As families and throughout the stages of the investigation, our hope has been to correct the errors and repair the defects that marred the arrest of Omar and Soulaiman, granting them provisional release because there was nothing to justify their continued detention», the families said. «However, each time, we were shocked by the rejection without explanation of the requests presented by their defense», they continued.

The families explain that «Soulaiman continues his open hunger strike which has lasted for 33 days with particularly exacerbated effects on his health». The former editor of the newspaper Akhbar Alyaoum «lost more than 22 kilos due to his potassium deficiency and a sharp rise in blood pressure, while Omar Radi lost 17 kilos with worsening symptoms of Crohn's disease».

Families hold the State and its authorities responsible for what may result from the continuation of this open hunger strike for Soulaiman Raissouni and Omar Radi.
