German researchers announced this week that they had discovered why the AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines cause blood clots. According to the Financial Times, which quotes studies by a group of scientists from the Goethe University in Frankfurt and Ulm University in Helmholtz, these rare clotting disorders can be resolved by modifying these vaccines.
These studies suggest that «the problem lies in the adenovirus vector — a common cold virus used so both vaccines can enter the body». Quoted by the same source, Dr Rolf Marschalek, professor at Goethe University, explained that these complications are mainly due to the fact that they are based on adenovirus vectors.
«Vaccine is delivered to the nucleus of the cell – a blob of DNA in the middle – rather than to the fluid around it that acts as a protein factory”, he said. «Bits of coronavirus proteins that get inside the nucleus can break up and the unusual fragments then get expelled out into the bloodstream, where they can trigger clotting in a tiny number of people», he added.
In April, an official from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) confirmed the existence of a «link» between the AstraZeneca vaccine and blood clots.
In Morocco, which also uses the vaccine, the health ministry recommended in April to continue using the vaccine.
