The Managing Director of the National Office of Hydrocarbons & Mines (ONHYM) Amina Benkhadra said Monday that Morocco considers exporting hydrogen to Europe through its Morocco-Nigeria gas pipeline. The step is possible by mixing it with gas as a first stage or erecting a second pipeline, if needed in the future.

In an interview with energy-focused media platform Attaqa, Benkhadra said that Morocco will «ask consultancies to study the matter in order to come up with the best ways to transport green hydrogen». «So far, we have reached the possibility of mixing 15% of green hydrogen and 85% of gas using the same pipeline», she said.

«As export capabilities develop in the future, it is possible that there will be a separate pipeline to export green hydrogen to Europe, in addition to the gas pipeline», she announced.

The Moroccan government plans to begin implementing the roadmap for green hydrogen production in Morocco during the coming year, 2024, through several projects, after a number of international companies expressed their desire to explore the Moroccan market.
