During a session at the Spanish lower house, also known as the Congress of Deputies, the leader of the Galician People's Union (BNG) Nestor Rego addressed the situation of pro-Polisario activist Aminatou Haidar. The latter saw her request to renew her Spanish residence card rejected.
«The government's decision has caused rejection, indignation and incomprehension throughout society», he said. The BNG, a left-wing regionalist group, supported the candidacy of Pedro Sanchez to form a new government. Rego called on the Spanish government not to give in to what he called «pressure» from Morocco.
Alongside this position expressed during the plenary session, the MP addressed a written question to the government on the subject. The Interior Ministry, led by socialist Fernando-Grande Marlaska, is required to provide an answer in the coming weeks.
The other left-wing groups that attended the parliamentary session on Wednesday, December 20, such as Sumar, Podemos and the Catalan and Basque separatists, deemed close to the Polisario, did not react to the rejection of Aminatou Haidar’s request to renew her residence card in Spain.
