Spain addresses refusal of Aminatou Haidar’s request to renew residence card

After three days of silence, the Spanish authorities have finally confirmed their refusal to renew Aminatou Haidar's residence card. The delegate of the Government in the community of Madrid, Francisco Martin, gave, Thursday, December 21, the government's version of the story regarding the rejection of the Sahrawi activist’s request.

«The government delegation is keen to respect the law. If a request does not respect the procedure in force, then there is no other solution than to refuse it», he explained, without referring exclusively to the case of Aminatou Haidar.

The lawyer of Haidar has already called the refusal a «political decision» and announced that she would take legal action. On Wednesday, the leader of the Galician People's Union (BNG) urged the Sanchez government to renew Aminatou Haidar's residence card.
