TAQA Morocco, created to meet Morocco's commitment to enrich its energy mix, is planning to build a renewable energy station in the south of the Kingdom with a capacity of 6,000 megawatts. The new station will be producing green hydrogen, with an investment amounting to 100 billion dirhams, government and senior officials from the energy firm told Asharq Bloomberg on Tuesday.

An official at the energy company said that the new station «will be the largest to date in Morocco in terms of investment and production capacity», to help increase the share of renewable energy in its energy mix to more than half by 2030.

The new station will be spanning a 70,000 hectares land that was acquired in the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region, the same source said, adding that the project may see the light within 10 to 15 years at most.

For his part, a senior official at the Ministry of Investment, Convergence and Evaluation of Public Policies said that the region expected to host this huge project, namely Dakhla-Oued Eddahab, has «recently attracted several projects in the same field with a total investment volume of approximately 220 billion dirhams».

It is worth mentioning that the Abu Dhabi National Energy Company owns 85% of the capital of Taqa Morocco, which is responsible for managing the largest coal-fired thermal station in Africa and the Middle East, located in the Jorf Lasfar region, where the station has 6 units with a production capacity of 2,056 megawatts.

King Mohammed VI previously urged the government to «prepare Morocco for green hydrogen» to join countries with strong qualifications in this forward-looking sector, and to respond to the multiple projects that international investors are looking forward to.
