Canadian police have pressed charges against a call center employee, arrested in Morocco on November 27 for cyber extortion and fake bomb threats, after targeting several facilities in Canada.

The Casablanca man is charged by the Ontario Provincial police (OPP) with «two counts of uttering threats, two counts of mischief and two counts of extortion», CBC reported on Wednesday, quoting an OPP press release.

Arrested following an investigation conducted by Morocco’s National Bureau for Combating Terrorism and Organized Crime and the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance, the 42-year-old Moroccan is believed to be behind fake bomb threats sent to several schools and institutions in Ontario, Canada.

The Ontario Provincial Police announced, in November, that several schools and public facilities in the Canadian province «received threats, indicating that bombs had been placed at their locations». The same individual is also responsible for similar threats that targeted schools in Belgium, police say.

«We're still in the process of working with the Belgian police to determine the next steps for this person who was arrested», Canadian police said. «The OPP is consulting with the federal department of justice to determine how this person will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice», it added.

In Morocco, investigations revealed that, indeed, the individual in question, had sent bomb threats to several facilities in Morocco and abroad.

Field investigations and technical expertise led to the identification and arrest of the suspect in Casablanca and revealed that the e-mails sent contained the bank account number of a Moroccan national living abroad, with the intention of taking revenge on the latter for disputes that had arisen between them during previous commercial transactions.

The suspect was taken into custody to complete the judicial investigation being conducted under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor's office to elucidate the ins and outs of this case.
