The latest issue of the Official Journal of Algeria, dated December 31, 2023, announces that loans granted to foreign governments were closed and entirely paid to the Algerian treasury.
The list of countries concerned includes Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso. These countries joined, during the Marrakech meeting on December 23, King Mohammed VI's international initiative to enable Atlantic Ocean access for Sahel States.
A similar decision was made by the Algerian government, in December 2014, when it decreased annual aid, then estimated at $80 million, intended for Mauritania, Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso. Four states which had left the Tamanrasset Coordination, created in 2010 by Algiers to fight against terrorism in the region. A few months earlier, they had joined the G5 Sahel launched by France.
