The President of the Mauritanian Parliament, retired General Mohamed Ould Meguett, is undertaking an official visit to Algeria from January 19 to 22. This trip aims to further consolidate the «excellent relations» between the two countries and explore new avenues for bolstering cooperation across various levels, according to a press release from the Algerian House of Representatives.

Ould Meguett, considered a close confidante of Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, arrives in Algiers just three days after talks between President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Mauritanian Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug. Ould Meguett's visit also takes place a few months after his predecessor, Cheikh Ould Baya, led a parliamentary delegation to Rabat, Morocco, in December 2022.

Prior to assuming his current role, Ould Meguett served as both Chief of Staff of the Mauritanian Army and Director General of the National Police. Notably, he visited Morocco in January 2020 while still holding the latter position.
