CAF launches investigation into Morocco and DR Congo Football bodies after post-match brawl

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched an investigation into the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) and the Congolese Association Football Federation (FECOFA) following a post-match brawl that erupted after their TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Cote d’Ivoire 2023 game on Sunday.

Tensions boiled over shortly after the final whistle, with Morocco team manager Walid Regragui approaching Congolese skipper Chancel Mbemba. Mbemba, already on a yellow card for dissent, reportedly made gestures towards the video assistant referee, igniting a brief melee involving players from both sides.

The incident has drawn sharp reactions from both sides. The FRMF released a statement condemning «all unsportsmanlike behavior» and emphasizing the «distinguished and historical relations» between Morocco and DR Congo. In contrast, FECOFA claimed their captain faced «inappropriate expressions and even physical assault» from Moroccan players and staff and threatened potential disciplinary action through CAF.

CAF has assured that no further comment will be made on the matter until the investigation is complete.
