The Spanish government appointed on Tuesday, January 23, Enrique Ojeda as the new ambassador to Morocco. For five years, Ojeda served as director of the Three Cultures Foundation, housed in the Moroccan pavilion built for the 1992 Seville Universal Exhibition.
This close association with Morocco has sparked some criticism from certain media outlets in Spain, particularly those sympathetic to the Polisario Front.
Prior to his role at the Three Cultures Foundation, Ojeda held the position of Director General of Cooperation of Autonomous Regions at the Ministry of Territorial Policy and Public Administration from 2009 to 2011, during the socialist government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.
Ojeda replaces Ricardo Díez-Hochleitner, who served as Spain's ambassador to Morocco since June 2015 under the previous Popular Party government led by Mariano Rajoy. At 70 years old, Díez-Hochleitner's departure opens the door for a new diplomatic chapter in Spain's relationship with Morocco.
