A Moroccan scientific research vessel, commissioned by Liberia's National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA), will arrive in Liberia on Friday, January 26th. This visit marks a significant step in assessing the commercial viability of Liberian waters and attracting further investment in the sector.
FrontPage Africa, a Liberian daily newspaper, reports that the vessel will conduct an independent stock assessment of Liberia's territorial waters. This data will be crucial for developing a sustainable management plan and attracting potential investors.
The vessel's arrival follows the signing of an agreement on January 31st, 2023, by Emma Metieh Glassco, Liberian Director General of NaFAA, and Mohammed Sadiki, Moroccan Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forest.
Minister Sadiki will lead a delegation to Liberia on Thursday, January 25th, for the official commissioning ceremony of the research vessel. The event will also be attended by regional Fisheries Cabinet Ministers from Cote D'Ivoire, Guinea Conakry, and others.
«The stock assessment aims to gather data that has long been missing in the fisheries sector», stated a press release from NaFAA, quoted by FrontPage Africa. «This data will be essential for developing a management plan, ensuring good governance, and determining the commercial viability of our fisheries».
