Algeria voiced its «deep concern and deep regret» following Mali's decision to scrap the 2015 peace agreement, known as the Algiers Agreement. In a press release, issued Friday, the Algerian Foreign ministry emphasized the potential dangers of this move, not just for Mali itself but for regional stability and the international community invested in the country's reconciliation process.
Addressing «the brotherly people of Mali», the Ministry acknowledged Algeria's unwavering support for the accord, emphasizing its sincerity, good faith, and solidarity. However, it strongly refuted the Malian authorities' justification for abandoning the agreement, labeling the list of reasons presented as «untrue and completely irrelevant».
The statement accused Mali of preparing for this decision for years, citing their gradual withdrawal from implementing the agreement, rejection of mediation efforts, and questioning the integrity of signatories.
Additionally, it criticized Mali's request for the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) withdrawal, increased arms purchases, and reliance on foreign mercenaries, viewing these actions as paving the way for a military solution over a political one.
The Ministry warned that opting for a military approach poses a significant threat to Malian unity, potentially inciting a civil war, hindering reconciliation, and endangering regional stability.
Mali attributed its decision to the failure of other signatories to honor their commitments and alleged «hostile actions» by Algeria, the agreement's primary mediator. This comes amidst diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
On December 20th, Mali summoned the Algerian ambassador, objecting to meetings held by Algeria with individuals considered hostile to the Malian government and certain signatories associated with «terrorist camps». These meetings were deemed «interference in internal affairs».
Despite this tension, Mali has taken recent steps towards rapprochement with Morocco. On January 22nd, Colonel Assimi Goita appointed a new ambassador to Morocco.
