Marrakech's unique cultural identity and rich history earned it the prestigious title of «Capital of Culture in the Islamic World» for 2024. This distinction was announced Friday by Salem ben Mohamed El Malik, Director General of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO).
«Marrakech, with its vibrant cultural scene fueled by writers, scholars, youth, artisans, and storytellers, embodies the spirit of this title», El Malik said at a press conference, attended by Moroccan Minister of Culture Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid. He emphasized that the city's architectural beauty, pulsating Jemaa El Fna square, and long-standing heritage make it a fitting representative of Islamic culture.
El Malik encouraged all Moroccans, particularly Marrakech's intellectuals, to actively engage in this year-long celebration. He envisioned the event as a platform to showcase the city's unique cultural tapestry, encompassing science, thought, literature, art, and music, not just for the Islamic world but for the entire globe.
He further announced that several countries have expressed interest in organizing cultural weeks alongside Marrakech. These collaborations promise to foster cultural exchange between Islamic nations, bringing together thinkers, artists, and artisans in a vibrant tapestry of shared experiences.
El Malik underscored ICESCO's commitment to celebrating cultural diversity and fostering mutual respect through its Capitals of Culture program, launched in 2001. He emphasized that this initiative is not simply a nostalgic look back but an investment in the present and a bridge to a future enriched by cultural exploration.
Marrakech's First Deputy Mayor, Mohamed Idrissi, echoed El Malik's sentiments, calling the city's selection a source of immense pride for its residents, civil society, and elected officials. He highlighted the municipality's cultural programs aimed at preserving Marrakech's architectural and ecological heritage and promoting cultural diversity. He urged Marrakech's citizens to embody the spirit of «Bahja» (joie de vivre) and embrace this opportunity to showcase the city's unparalleled cultural wealth.
