The United Nations Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, met with South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor in Pretoria on Wednesday. While South African diplomacy offered minimal details, releasing just photos of the meeting, further information emerged during Pandor's subsequent press briefing.

Journalists pressed the Minister to clarify the purpose of de Mistura's visit. She described the discussion as «useful» and focused on «examining various approaches related to Western Sahara», but declined to elaborate further.

«These are confidential matters», she explained, apologizing for her reticence, and stating that she needed time to consider «proposals» before commenting further. Notably, she did reiterate that the discussion had been «useful».

It's worth noting that proposals for resolving the Western Sahara conflict, usually initiated by the United Nations or the United States, are typically presented to Algeria, the Polisario Front's main ally. Additionally, the UN only announced de Mistura's South Africa visit the day before it occurred.
