Cape Verde has reiterated its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, according to statements made by Foreign Minister Rui Alberto De Figueiredo Soares in Rabat on January 5th, 2024.

Last March, then-newly elected President of the Republic, José Maria Neves (in power since November 9, 2021), signed declarations expressing support for the Polisario.

«We hope that this referendum can take place and this conflict still present in the Maghreb can be resolved effectively for the good of the populations. It is good to give a voice to the Sahrawi people within the framework of the United Nations system, in compliance with international law, and allow them to decide their future, decide their destiny», Neves said.

For the record, Cape Verde opened a consulate in Dakhla in August 2022.
