Following months of media attacks against the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Algerian government has imposed sanctions on Emirati investments. The state-controlled Algerian-Emirati Tobacco Company (STAEM) is the first casualty, with the Justice Ministry barring notaries from processing related deeds.

This action follows a January 10th High Security Council meeting chaired by President Tebboune, which discussed «the general situation in the country and the security situation linked to neighboring countries and the Sahel».

While condemning «hostile actions against Algeria from a brother Arab country» without naming it, a local press release mentioned accusations by Algerian media last week targeting Morocco, UAE, and Israel for «fomenting instability in the Sahel».

Beyond tobacco, Dubai Port World (DP World) manages the Algiers and Djen Djen ports. Additionally, Algerian-Emirati joint ventures operate in the defense sector, including assembling Mercedes armored vehicles in Tiaret.
