Spain has taken a new step towards recognizing the Moroccan nature of the Sahara : the mention of Laayoune as a Moroccan city in an official document. Published in the Spanish Official Bulletin, this reference is related to the start of construction works of a Spanish college in Laayoune.

This geographical clarification on the part of the left-wing coalition executive comes a few weeks after the modifications officially introduced on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the Sahara question, reported pro-Polisario newspaper El Independiente.

«Spain supports a mutually acceptable political solution, within the UN framework and Security Council resolutions. Spain supports the work of the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary General and maintains its humanitarian commitment to the population of the Sahrawi refugee camp», emphasized the department headed by José Manuel Albares.

The passage does not include references to the «right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination», further angering Algeria, a staunch supporter of the Polisario Front.
