Researchers from the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus alliance, three Moroccan knowledge institutions, agricultural and horticultural businesses, and government agencies from both countries are joining forces to make the Moroccan agricultural sector more sustainable, the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centre for Sustainability announced on Monday.

The collaboration focuses on developing sustainable greenhouse cultivation methods with optimized water management, closed-loop systems, and resilient plants. The complementary expertise of the partners provides unique opportunities for co-creation.

TU Delft contributes expertise in water management, sensing, and technologies for smarter greenhouses. Erasmus University Rotterdam focuses on chain and network collaboration for efficient storage and transport of products. The Leiden Center for Environmental Science (CML) adds knowledge of environmental system analysis and the development of resilient cultivation methods.

The Moroccan partners bring knowledge of local cultivation technologies and the context of the Moroccan agricultural sector. Dutch knowledge and technology will be adapted to the semi-arid and arid climate zone of Morocco through co-creation with local partners.

A visit by Annetje Ottow, Chair of the Executive Board of Leiden University and the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus alliance, to the Netherlands Institute in Morocco (NIMAR) in Rabat on February 27, 2024, and a Moroccan mission to the Netherlands from February 13 to 15, 2024, contribute to strengthening the collaboration.

The collaboration aims to develop an impact cluster, a scientific agenda, and educational activities for sustainable Moroccan agriculture. It aligns with the «Feeding and Greening Megacities» internationalization strategy of Greenport West-Holland.

The Moroccan mission to the Netherlands includes meeting with Jaap Smit (King's Commissioner of South Holland), Jaap Bond (Chair of the Top Sector Horticulture and Propagation Materials), and scientists and companies operating within Greenport West-Holland.

The mission concludes with a seminar on the collaboration, organized in cooperation with the Top Sector Horticulture and Propagation Materials, with participation from Dutch horticultural companies.
