Pro-Morocco petitioners submitted a statement to the UN 4th Committee criticizing Staffan de Mistura's January 31st visit to South Africa. The statement expresses strong opposition to the visit, calling it «imprudent», «ill-advised», and «destabilizing» to describe its impact on peace efforts.
They specifically criticize South Africa's stance on Western Sahara, which they believe undermines international law and the UN-led political process.
The petitioners reaffirm their support for the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative for the Sahara, calling it the «only credible, realistic, and lasting solution» to the regional dispute. They urged the South African government to change its approach, which they consider harmful to peace prospects.
Several prominent individuals, including former Peruvian Minister of Foreign Affairs Miguel A. Rodríguez Mackay, signed the statement. Moroccan officials also reiterated their strong opposition to South Africa's involvement in the Western Sahara issue. Meanwhile, the Polisario welcomed de Mistura's visit, and the UN defended it.
