Four workers, including two Moroccan nationals, lost their lives in a devastating collapse at an Esselunga supermarket construction site in Florence, Italy, on February 16th. Three others, all Romanian citizens, were critically injured and remain hospitalized.

The incident sparked outrage and grief, with Florence Mayor Dario Nardella declaring a city-wide mourning and construction unions calling for a nationwide strike. Investigations are ongoing, focusing on potential negligence and cause of the collapse.

The two Moroccan victims are Mohamed El Farhane, a 24-year-old Moroccan citizen and Taoufik Haidar, a 43-year-old Moroccan resident of Bergamo. His sister and nephew traveled from Perugia to identify him. Initial investigations suggest both El Farhane and Haidar may not have held valid residency permits.

Investigations by the Florence prosecutor's office are underway, with a case filed for negligent collapse and manslaughter. The construction site remains under seizure as authorities delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
