The Mexican Senate held a special session to welcome Enaam Mayara, President of the Moroccan House of Councilors. In his address, Mayara notably avoided the sensitive issue of Western Sahara, instead emphasizing the need to strengthen bilateral relations and «elevate them to an exemplary partnership in terms of South-South cooperation».
To achieve this goal, Mayara emphasized, «legislative institutions and parliamentarians of both countries must contribute to overcoming any obstacles or historical misunderstandings».
This shift in focus comes as Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's administration, known for its «fertilizer diplomacy», opens doors for Morocco in the executive branch.
Mexico, a traditional buyer of phosphates extracted from the Sahara, sees potential opportunities in this area, according to an NGO report by AREN, which supports the Polisario Front.
Mexican Senate president Olga Sanchez Cordero previously visited Morocco in June 2022, meeting with officials including Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.
