The UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, arrived in Mauritania on Tuesday. In Nouakchott, he held talks with the Minister of Defense, Hananna Ould Sidi.
«The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss bilateral cooperation relations between our country and the UN and ways of strengthening them», the Mauritanian army said in a statement.
De Mistura was then received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug. «Our discussions focused on international efforts to resolve the Western Sahara conflict and the role assigned to our country due to its close relations with the various players in the conflict», he wrote Tuesday on X.
Staffan de Mistura's visit comes at a time when the Security Council is due to discuss the Sahara issue on April 16.
