The Polisario has reacted to the conditions demanded by Morocco to resume the political process, which has been halted since March 2019. The Front has «strongly condemned the language of rejection and intransigence contained in the communiqué», published at the end of the meeting, held on Thursday in Rabat, between Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and UN envoy Staffan de Mistura.
The separatist movement believes that through its «conditions», Morocco «continues to disregard Security Council resolutions, notably resolution 2703 (2023), which has consistently called on the parties to resume negotiations under the auspices of the Secretary-General without preconditions and in good faith». This resolution, however, was condemned by the Polisario.
On the other hand, the Polisario reaffirmed its commitment to the 1991 settlement plan, described as «a realistic, reasonable and consensual solution to the question of the decolonization of Western Sahara».
Since 2007, the Security Council has turned the page on the old resolutions, advocating a «mutually acceptable solution, based on compromise, which provides for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara in the context of arrangements consistent with the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations».
