Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf arrived in Nairobi on Monday, April 8, for an «official bilateral visit on behalf of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune» according to a statement from the Algeria Foreign Ministry.
The visit comes just days before Kenyan President William Ruto's expected visit to Morocco in the coming weeks. It also follows the visit of Kenya's Principal Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Abraham Korir SingOei, to Morocco on March 21, carrying a message from President Ruto to King Mohammed VI.
According to the ministry, Attaf's visit to Nairobi aims to «consolidate consultation and coordination on regional and international developments in light of the firm commitment of the two countries to the goals and objectives of African unity and joint African action to overcome the challenges facing the countries and peoples of the continent».
After his election on September 13, 2023, the Kenyan president announced on X that he would cut ties with the «Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic». He later retracted the tweet and announced that his country's position on the Sahara dispute is that of the United Nations. Kenya has recognized the «SADR» since June 2005.
