An Amsterdam bridge was named after Moroccan painter Abdellah Zaki, known as the Moroccan Van Gogh. The bridge, located in Amsterdam West, was officially dedicated on Sunday, April 14, by the city's mayor in the presence of the painter’s daughter.
«The Abdellah Zaki Bridge symbolizes the connection between two cultures», said Zaki's daughter, Hajia Zaki. «He was a bridge builder, he brought people together», his daughter explains.
«When I see today how many people from different cultures are present here at this naming ceremony, that's exactly what my father wanted», she added.
During the ceremony, an information board about the bridge and the story of the painter was also unveiled.
Born in Casablanca, Abdellah Zaki came to Flevoland as a migrant worker in 1961. He worked in a dog food factory in Lelystad but continued to paint in his spare time. Zaki lived in Swifterbant until his death in 2017.
