Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf arrived at UN headquarters on April 16, hours before the start of a closed session of the Security Council devoted to the Sahara issue.

At the UN, Attaf met with UN envoy Staffan de Mistura to discuss «UN steps and efforts aimed at relaunching the political process, involving both parties to the conflict – the Polisario Front and Morocco, to find a solution guaranteeing the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination», according to the Algerian Foreign Ministry.

This meeting preceded De Mistura's briefing to the Security Council on developments related to the Sahara issue since the last resolution adopted on October 29, 2023.

Attaf also met with US Deputy Assistant Secretary Joshua Harris, where the Sahara issue was again central. They discussed «the latest developments in this dossier and the expected outcome of the Security Council session». Notably, Harris had previously visited Algiers twice in 2023 to discuss the issue with the Algerian Foreign Minister.

While Attaf was in New York, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and General Said Chengriha received the Polisario leader in Algiers.
