Mauritanian Foreign Minister Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug met with the Algerian Ambassador in Nouakchott on Wednesday, April 24th. Their discussions reportedly centered on «strengthening the distinguished cooperative relations between the two sister countries», according to the Foreign Minister's post on the X platform.

This meeting comes amidst regional tensions following the Tunis Summit on April 22nd, which involved Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. Notably, Mauritania was absent from the summit.

The final statement from the meeting called for Mauritania's participation, emphasizing the three countries' willingness to collaborate with «any sincere political will» that prioritizes regional progress, security, and development. The statement further urged a move away from «political axes and the risks of foreign intervention».

Adding to the regional intrigue, the day after the Tunis Summit, the President of the Libyan Presidential Council sent a written message to King Mohammed VI of Morocco.
