The Moroccan Embassy in Kenya strongly opposes the spread of a video on social media showing alleged Moroccan police officers assaulting a passenger from the Sahel region at an airport. Serious accusations were made against Morocco and a call to boycott Royal Air Maroc accompanied the video posted by Mike Sonko, the former governor of Nairobi. The video went viral on X, reaching approximately 320,000 views by Wednesday evening.

To stop the spread of these unfounded accusations that harm the Kingdom's image in Africa, the Moroccan Embassy in Kenya clarified that «the events depicted in this video did not occur in Morocco, and the individuals portrayed are not affiliated with Moroccan police forces».

A simple internet search reveals that the assault on the passenger actually occurred in July 2022. According to Middle East Eye, the incident took place at the Tunis airport. The same source reported on the incident with the headline «Serious incidents at Tunis airport: Witnesses denounce racist violence». In May 2023, a Gabonese news site brought the video back to light, falsely accusing the Moroccan police.

After a year, the video has now resurfaced, shared by Mike Sonko. It is worth noting that in March 2022, the U.S. Department of State declared Sonko a persona non grata in the United States «due to his involvement in significant corruption. His actions undermined the rule of law and the public’s faith in Kenya’s democratic institutions and public processes».
