Kenya hosted the preparatory ministerial meeting for the Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit, which took place from May 7 to 9 in Nairobi. Morocco was represented by a high-level delegation led by the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water, and Forests, Mohamed Sadiki, and senior officials from Moroccan phosphate miner OCP.
Sadiki highlighted Morocco's commitment to sharing its expertise and experience in fertilizers and soil health with fellow African nations. He emphasized the importance of South-South collaboration in Africa, stating that Morocco actively shares its knowledge and best practices, including through OCP.
OCP, which also participated in the meeting, announced a planned «dialogue with stakeholders» to explore opportunities and address challenges related to fertilizer and soil health. This dialogue will focus on post-summit coordination, compatible investments, and implementation strategies for agreed-upon projects.
Following Morocco's lead, Algeria also presented its experiences in fertilizers and soil health to African countries. Algerian Minister of Agriculture, Youcef Cherfa, emphasized Algeria's willingness to share its expertise in training personnel, sustainable resource management, and fertilizer production and distribution. He noted Algeria's position as a key fertilizer producer and supplier, fulfilling domestic needs and exporting to Africa, Europe, Asia, and South America.
In January, Algeria donated 16,000 tons of fertilizers to Kenya. Africa Intelligence reported in April that Kenyan President William Ruto intends to visit Morocco. The construction of a fertilizer plant in Kenya is seen as a potential key to rapprochement between the two countries. This project could be announced during Ruto's visit to Morocco.
