A 25-year-old Moroccan medical graduate faces deportation in Germany because his qualifications aren't yet recognized. Abdelhamid El Khadiri, who fled the war in Ukraine, has been working as a nursing assistant at the Braunschweig Marienstift hospital, reports public German broadcaster NDR.

El Khadiri has filed an application with the German Hardship Commission to cancel his deportation and stay in Germany. The young man has a medical degree from Ukraine but needs to complete an additional year to practice as a doctor in Germany.

While his qualifications aren't fully recognized yet, El Khadiri has received temporary permission to stay, allowing him to continue working at the hospital while the Hardship Commission considers his application. He hopes for permanent residency and the chance to pursue a career as a doctor in Germany.

El Khadiri's situation has drawn support from his employer and a local politician, who believe the laws should be reviewed to address such situations.

«The next step will be to clarify to what extent we, together with authorities and politicians, can support him in being able to pursue the career he wants as a doctor in Germany», Braunschweig's Bundestag member, Christos Pantazis (SPD), commented on the case.

El Khadiri’s initial deportation order is due May 11th.
