Belgium probes alleged possible «Moroccan interference in elections»

Belgian authorities are investigating «potential Moroccan interference in the country's upcoming elections», RTBF reported on May 10th.

This investigation follows RTBF's December exposé on Belgian officials advocating for the Moroccan autonomy plan for Western Sahara.

The Central Office for the Repression of Corruption (OCRC) initially reviewed RTBF's findings and submitted a report in late December. After discussions between prosecutors, the Brussels public prosecutor's office formally opened an investigation in late March 2024.

While the prosecutor's office declined to comment on specific charges, it coincides with a recent Belgian law criminalizing «foreign interference in a democratic process».

This investigation stems from RTBF's December reports, one focusing on Morocco's ambassador and another on alleged Moroccan «relays» within Belgian local parliaments.

Belgium faces a busy electoral year with regional, senate, and European Parliament elections all scheduled for 2024. The year culminates with municipal elections in October.
